Fun in the Sun: Turfing and Planting delivered by Cargo Bike
A full day of turfing, planting and sunshine — all delivered the Green Wheels way.
Fun in the sun — loading up fresh plants for the day’s project using our Carla Cargo trailer.
Some jobs just feel like summer from start to finish — bright skies, fresh turf, new plants, and the satisfying buzz of transforming a space in just a few hours. This project involved refreshing front and back garden areas with new turf and a colourful, wildlife-friendly planting scheme… all transported by pedal power.
At Green Wheels Gardening, we move tools, turf and plants across Glasgow using our Carla Cargo electric-assist trailer, keeping our footprint low and our work local. This job was the perfect example of how practical (and fun!) sustainable gardening can be.
Loading Up: Plants by Cargo Bike
The Carla Cargo loaded with mixed perennials ready to head across town.
We started the day by sourcing a range of hardy perennials chosen for long flowering periods and good structure, including:
Aster varieties for late-season colour
Compact Hebes for evergreen interest
Rockery-style groundcovers for trailing texture
Pollinator-friendly blooms to keep the border lively
Everything was loaded onto the Carla Cargo — a powerful, stable bike trailer capable of carrying heavy loads without emissions. It’s ideal for garden work in the city: no parking worries, no fumes, and surprisingly fast door-to-door.
Fresh Turf for a Clean, Green Finish
Fresh rolls of turf arriving by cargo trailer — sustainable transport in action.
Once plants were delivered, we headed back out to collect the turf. Freshly cut and full of moisture, turf can be heavy — but the trailer handled it easily. After levelling and preparing the soil, we laid the turf in tight staggered rows to ensure a seamless join and even rooting.
The new lawn instantly brightened the space, replacing tired or patchy sections with a smooth green strip perfect for everyday use.
Planting Up the Long Border
Newly mulched border giving structure along the fence line.
Along the fence, we created a mixed border designed for colour, movement, and year-round foliage. After spacing the plants, we topped the soil with a generous layer of mixed woodchip mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
This border will knit together beautifully over the coming months, softening the fence and adding texture to what was previously unused space.
A Cleaner, Greener Way to Garden in the City
What makes days like this so rewarding is not just the transformation itself — but how it was achieved. Using cargo bikes means:
zero emissions
no engine noise
flexibility in tight urban areas
supporting a slower, more considered approach to gardening
It’s good for clients, good for the city, and great for the gardens we work on.
The Finished Result
Fresh turf, tidy borders and new planting ready to flourish.

By the end of the day, the garden had come to life again — greener, brighter, and full of potential. A simple mix of turfing and carefully chosen perennials made a massive visual difference, turning a tired corner into a space that feels looked-after and welcoming.
